Organic Compost

Healthy soil feeds healthy plants! The first line of defense a plant has against disease and predators is its own good health. Healthy plants don’t succumb to disease or insects as easily as sick plants. Healthy plants come from healthy soil. When we run into plants with problems in the garden, most often the cause is a deficient soil. Soil is a living system that needs tending just like any garden. In many areas, particularly new developments, soil has been stripped, stockpiled, and re-spread without regard to re-establishing the graduated layers of soil and sub-soil and communities of micro-organisms which took years to establish . As a consequence, the soil is essentially dead and can’t offer much to plants that grow in it. Only the toughest, most opportunistic plants (weeds) survive, and often overcome the crops, flowers or shrubs that we want to thrive. So building a healthy soil and understanding that this is the crux of good gardening is the place to start. To that end, adding copious amounts of good compost as a top dress should be an annual or semi-annual activity both to rehabilitate tired soil and keep healthy soil healthy. Commercial non-organic (chemical based) fertilizers interfere with and destroy soil micro-organisms, making the plants dependent on chemical intervention.
